Connecting with the soul of Australia

At Bushiejohn Mark2, my photography boasts a truly unique style, deeply rooted in a spiritual connection with the Australian land. I've always been influenced by the rhythms of nature and the universe. The shapes, lines, and colours draw you into a world of light and symbolism found within Australia's landscapes.

My images are often multi-layered, aiming to capture those delicate seasonal changes that bring an explosion of colour – from the soft hues of early morning to the deep, rich tones of fading evening light. Just as seasons shift, so too do the colours and light transform again. Good art, to me, is a window to the artist's soul, a reflection of their true inner person, and ideally, of community values. For observers, good art should touch the soul and resonate there.

My journey began in the small wheat-growing town of Walpeup in the Mallee, Victoria, during the 1950s. This semi-arid region, nestled between the Little Desert and the Sunset Country (both renowned for their wildflowers), fostered a deep bond with the Australian bush, inherited from my father's own love for it. I grew to have a strong connection with nature's biorhythms.

My father's passion for photography ignited my own, teaching me at an early age to capture events, places, and objects through photographs. Later, when I could afford my own cameras, I discovered SLRs, which opened up a whole new world of creative photography for storytelling. Now, in my mature years, I continue to pose questions rather than provide answers, encouraging you to look deep inside yourselves to find your own.
